Substrate:

Forest Bed by T-Rex. I really like using a Forest Bedding type substrate in my tanks because it helps to keep the humidity up and the crabs love to dig in it. If you're going to use a wood type substance, be sure that it's made from some type of coconut fiber. Since the Forest Bed label does not list it's ingredients, I've emailed T-Rex customer support and they've confirmed that it's made from coconut fiber. I've tried using Eco-Earth and I don't like it as much as Forest Bed because it "clumps" while Forest Bed stays "fluffy". As soon as I get a brick of Bed a Beast I will report my opinion on it.

Type of crab:

A few people have asked me what type of crab is my favorite. I don't have a favorite type of crab. They all have their own individual personalities and I have favorites from each species.

  1. Biped (the PP)
  2. Dr. Evil (the E) is so much fun to watch. He's very hyper and likes to play "King of the Hill" on the highest branch in the crabitat. He usually wins too!
  3. Rock Lobster (the Strawberry) lets me kiss her!
  4. Patchy (the PP) is my little molting machine. It has been amazing to see how much she's grown over the past year. There's no mistaking Patchy either, she only has 1 1/2 eyes!
Food:

My new favorite for the crabs is T-Rex Crab Island food because it has a lot of nutritious ingredients. I also feed my hermit crabs fresh fruits and vegetables.

I have been reading about commercial pet foods and some of the inadequate ingredients they use in pet foods (including hermit crab food). I will be posting more about this soon.

Supplement:

JurassiCal Dry, cuttlebone, sand dollars, egg shells, spirulina, algae (purple and red), JurassiVite

A crabbing friend of mine has recommended a few natural herbs to supplement the crabs' food. I will post more information as I learn more.

Treat: Dried baby shrimp, dried plankton, bloodworms, FMR Treat, Poppy's special treat (coconut, papaya, bananachips, dried carrots, oats & grains, pineapple ground up in a coffee grinder), brine shrimp, unsalted popcorn, cheerios
Crabitat Decoration: Fake terrarium plants, grapevine, cholla wood.
Occasionally I redecorate the crabitat. We're currently in our "Pirates" them so my favorite decorations are the large sunken ship, treasure chest, and pirate's skull.
