boy
or girl HERMIT?
 |
 |
If you ever
witness a shell change, you can also determine the gender
of a crab by looking for hairy pleopods on female land hermit
crabs. The setae-covered pleopods are located on the left
side of the abdomen. The female hermit crab gathers and attaches
her eggs to her pleopods with a glue like substance.
Male hermit crabs have
vestigial pleopods or none at all and they are not covered
with setae.
Rarely, hermit crabs are
purchased ladened with eggs. A few people have gotten the
eggs to hatch in salt water, however, none have lived past
the zoeae stage. |
